I was recently asked by a friend to teach her English writing. She’s good at writing in Chinese, but wonders how come she could not do the same in English either. To be honest, that’s really a challenge for me! At the beginning, I thought that might be too difficult for me and I did not know how to get started.

Below I would like to share some underlying factors that from my point of view would contribute to “good English writing”: Vocabulary You always need to have enough vocabulary in your mind before writing. This is the basic requirement. Just like building a house, you need to get enough raw construction material first, such as sand and cement. Vocabulary is the sand and cement of writing. By having enough vocabulary, you will be able to describe things in details.

 Writing techniques
“How to eat an elephant, one bite at a time!” It could be very difficult to eat up an elephant at a time, but it is not that difficult to

bite at a time, agree? And if you continue to do a good job on each bite, then eventually you will eat up the whole elephant without

frustration.

As you may know, a complete essay is a combination of paragraphs. A paragraph is a combination of sentences. Likewise, a sentence

is a combination of words. I have mentioned earlier about how to start with words, now let me move forward to the sentence.

Below are three main types of sentence that make a good paragraph:

Topic sentence
Literally, a topic sentence states what the entire paragraph is about. It is a general sentence that presents the topic clearly. Usually,

we put the topic sentence at the beginning of a paragraph although some people may put it at the end of a paragraph. In my

opinion, the front loading of this sentence better follows the logic and it is easier to draw reader’s attention and make them eager to

read more.

Supporting sentence
You always follow topic sentences with several supporting sentences. Supporting sentences help to elaborate your idea or opinion

further. It is like you give an explanation to tell the reader why you have such idea or opinion.
